Mounted level, and into something solid

The common mistake is hanging something heavy on drywall alone. I find the studs first.

I mount TVs, mirrors, shelves, curtain rods and grab bars, using a stud finder, a level and the right anchor for what's behind the wall. In old plaster over lath, I use methods that don't crack it.

What's included

  • Mount a TV on a bracket you've bought

  • Hang a heavy mirror or art on studs or rated anchors

  • Fit shelves and rails, level and plumb

  • Install curtain rods and blinds

  • Set grab bars into studs where there are some

What changes the time

Why one job takes an hour and another takes three

  • What's behind the wall

Studs, lath, block or nothing. I check before I drill, and the answer decides the anchor and the time.

  • Weight and size

A big TV or a heavy mirror needs two people and the right bracket. I bring a helper's worth of patience, not a crew.

  • Cables

I can hide a cable behind a plate or a cover. I won't cut into a wall to run new power; that's an electrician's job.

Where I stop

What I won't do on this kind of job

  • Run new electrical outlets or power behind a TV
  • Mount over a fireplace where the heat or the wiring is unknown
  • Hang anything that I can't tie to a stud or a rated anchor

Questions

Mounting and hanging: what people ask

Can you mount a TV over my fireplace?

Only if the wall is solid and the heat is low. If I'm not sure, I won't do it, and I'll say why.

Do you hide the cables?

I can use a cover or run them down behind the wall with a plate where the code allows it. New power outlets go to an electrician.

What if there's no stud where I want the shelf?

I use a rated anchor, or move the shelf an inch or two to a stud. I'll show you both and you decide.
